We begin by explaining the class’s limitations and objectives, highlighting that while students won’t be practicing compressions or breaths in real-time, they will learn critical steps, best practices, and when to intervene.
We will discuss the anatomy and physiology involved in CPR, focusing on how compressions and breaths help circulate oxygen in a cardiac arrest situation.
We will explain the roles of high-quality compressions, proper depth, and chest recoil, emphasizing how these actions support the heart and lungs.
We use detailed videos or live demonstrations with a mannequin to illustrate proper hand placement, compression depth, and breathing technique. High-quality, close-up visuals allow students to see techniques that would be hard to observe in person.
We encourage students to practice hand positioning on a surface in front of them, mimicking the correct positioning and motion even if they’re not applying actual force.
We will set up interactive scenarios where students need to decide when and how to apply CPR. This can include asking questions like, “What do you do if someone doesn’t respond?” or “When do you call for emergency help?”
We make it engaging by asking students to “act out” the steps without physical contact, such as moving through the motions of checking responsiveness, calling 911, and pretending to deliver compressions and breaths.
We will go over the steps for using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), showing them how to place the pads and explaining how the device will guide them.
Although you can’t perform real compressions, students can mimic the motions, and you can give feedback based on their form and understanding.
We will be using creative feedback tools like thumbs-up/thumbs-down, quizzes, or polls can reinforce correct knowledge and give you insights into their grasp of the techniques.
We allow plenty of time for questions about the concepts covered, reinforcing the importance of high-quality CPR even if they can’t do a skills test.
We will wrap up with a review of the main points, including the critical role of timely CPR and the importance of refresher training when they have the chance to do in-person skill tests.
We will be providing a 2 year certification without any skills test. Students are asked to seek out the skills portion in their local community.
Without the skills test, students will have a good foundation in CPR principles, leaving them more confident and prepared if they later practice in person.
